Notable: Music, reinvented classic. Texture/style

I am a huge fan of the Mario game series. I have played almost all of the games right from the first 8 bit Mario game. This one incorporate many elements of the originals music and features a slim Mario character slamming the enemies into oblivion using his hammer. I love the use of texture to emphasize the artistic bend or whatever point these guys want to prove. Must watch. A heavy dose of drama awaits you here.

First of all. I decided to stop using Flash for developing Flash docs. Wierd as it may sound, I installed FlashDevelop, an open source and free IDE for Actionscript 2.0 and Actionscript 3.0.

With that done, I researched for an open source 3D engine that would help me develop some 3D games over Actionscript 3.0 I stumbled across and PaperVision after hours of skimming through documentation and testing actual test movies created using each of the available librarieds. To start developing using PaperVision3D, this documentation is all you need.

The tutorials over at this site definitely helps. I extended a base class downloaded from that site to get all the boilerplate code and started hacking away on it. And in the end, this is what came out. Its just a trial to test the ground and to make sure it ain’t quick sand.

I read at the Adobe site that Flash Player 10 comes with native 3D. What will happen when it does come ou? These 3D engines will have to stack some hot new features to be still in use when it comes out. That was my first thought. But native 3D would run much faster (obviously when the library is coded into the runtime and is not run as AS by the runtime). So, these libraries will basically have to re-code their core in such a way that it abstracts the details of the native 3D and provides the programmer with classes that even a 5th grader could instantiate and throw around. And when the core code is being adapted to make use of the new native code, there comes the deamon called backwards compatiblity. These libraries would definitely want to tell their end user coders that their new library will make the old movies run faster after a recompile without any recoding. But, implementing backwards compatiblity will probably only happen after sacrificing a lot of functionality that could have been there. Frankly, I dont think these libraries will still be around after the next version of Adobe’s official IDE comes with support for native 3D, or after an official SDK with such capablity is released. Till then, PaperVision3D rulez.

But, I have a feeling that I would be working with FlashDevelop for a while.
